Joining TGAW
Tudor Grange Academy, Worcester is a mixed, 11-18 comprehensive school with a capacity to serve 1100 students, including a sixth form of 200 students.
The Academy opened in 2009, replacing Elgar Technology College. This was a ground breaking project as it was the first Academy of its kind in that it was an Academy which was being sponsored by a very high performing maintained state school: Tudor Grange School Solihull.
BEING PART OF A COMPELLING SUCCESS STORY
The project has been a resounding success, turning around a seriously undersubscribed school which had been in special measures for two years so that it is now one of the most popular schools in Worcester, heavily oversubscribed in all new intakes. Results have been transformed: 98% of our students achieved 5 A*-C GCSE or equivalents. Last year 48% of students achieved C grade and above for both English and Mathematics, this meant that the Academy has more than doubled the number of students achieving 3 levels progress in both of these subjects; this year we are confident that we will secure the title of one of the most improved schools in the country with even more astonishing results.
A SCHOOL WITH A REAL, PROFESSIONAL FOCUS ON THE CORE BUSINESS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
Striking improvements in results have been achieved by a sustained focus on the quality of teaching and learning in the Academy. Concerted work on rigorous assessment routines and planning, in tandem with high quality training for all staff in other areas such as ‘Attachment Theory’, has driven improvement across the Academy so that we are recognised for having some of the most outstanding practitioners in the country. Our recent OFSTED inspection made it clear that teaching and learning within the Academy is very strong and their expectation is that this will render outstanding progress over the next three years if it is sustained.
Departments are given room to plan and meet regularly and this had led to the consistency OFSTED recently remarked upon. All departments work to common schemes of work and to common assessments at the end of each half term. Such a focus on clarity and consistency has given teachers real confidence in their work and sustains constant professional dialogue about the progress students are making.
"STUDENTS ARE WELL BEHAVED, POLITE AND CONSIDERATE AROUND SCHOOL." OFSTED FEB 2012
We are extremely proud of the high standards we maintain in discipline and uniform. The standards we maintain stun visitors to the school, we feel that this is largely attributable to the fact that students are very proud of their school and they enjoy the opportunities it provides for them. We celebrate prize evening every year at Worcester Cathedral and place real emphasis on rewarding students for achievement and endeavour. Our curriculum is very innovative, at its heart is our skills, action and service programme delivered on Wednesday afternoons, this is taught in vertical groups and allows the students to pursue the things they are most passionate about. Students also engage in extra-curricular opportunities which we refer to as period 6, this has helped to sustain fabulous performances and also strong results in a range of sports.
JOINING ‘A BRAND’
The relationship between the two schools is extremely strong and continues to be ground breaking as a very competitive ‘brand’ is emerging of a family of Tudor Grange schools. Tudor Grange Academy in Solihull has retained its outstanding status and is now a leading Teaching School. Being part of the Teaching Alliance with TGAS sustains high quality CPD for any schools in the alliance and also provides real career opportunities and progression for teachers working within a brand which is expanding all the time.
